The Game

The rules of Frogs is simple; the player controls a black and white frog that jumps up and hops left and right. The goal is to catch butterflies and dragonflies flying across the screen while at the same time trying not to fall off the lily pads. The game is timed but will award an extra game to those who catch the dragonflies, which are significantly smaller than the butterflies and are worth more points. According to the Frogs manual, there are multiple different sounds in the game, including a hop sound, a jump (boing) sound, a tongue (zip) sound, a capture (croak) sound, a fly (buzz) sound, and then a splash. The main playable screen is a projected black and white screen onto a mirror that is held at an angle inside of the cabinet. The background and lily pads are in color, mostly green and brown, and are static. However, the lily pads are part of the game and if the frog falls off the game is over. The screen is nineteen inches and 5.75 feet tall; the play screen displays the daily top score to beat along with the player’s score and time remaining.
