Conclusion

For this project, I used information about Frogs and a game emulator to examine the game. Unfortunately, I could not gain access to a physical copy of the game cabinet. This created an interesting “new media encounter” that is not between the original cabinet game and this presentation but rather an emulated version of the game and this presentation. The emulated version of Frogs makes the game more accessible to the public and allows those who view this presentation to view and even play the game similarly to how I did. Additionally, the emulated version is more sustainable in the long run and requires less upkeep than the original coin-operated machine. However, without the use of the original cabinet, much of the detail and nuances were lost such as, the way the game plays on the actual machine versus on a webpage, how the controls feel instead of just a keyboard, and graphically what the game looks like. Lastly, there is a certain charm or connection that is lost when playing on the emulated version, similar to when you read an E-book instead of a physical copy of a book, it might be more convenient but it will never be the same experience as reading a physical copy. I believe that noting this distinction between the emulated version of Frogs and the original cabinet game is important to understand the viewpoint of this presentation and feel it is vital to take into consideration when studying this project.
