Introduction

Lolita is a novel written in English by Russian writer Vladimir Nabokov. In 1956, the French government listed this novel as an obscene work and banned it for the first time due to its sexual content and unusual themes. After the book was accepted and published by GP Putnam's Sons Publishing House in the United States, it quickly became No. 1 on the list of best-selling novels in the United States (Feeney, 1993). Due to the popularity of Lolita, the book was adapted into a movie twice. The first Lolita film was directed by Stanley Kubrick and was released in 1962. In 1997, the Lolita movie directed by Adrian Lyne was released (POWER,1999). Besides, the character "Lolita" in the book has also been quoted many times in fashion media and magazines. This exhibit will show how media affected public perception of Lolita, causing people to believe that the novel promotes pedophilia and the sexualization of children.
