Library Censorship in the United States

In 1958, G.P. Putnam's Sons agreed to publish Lolita in the United States. After the novel was published, Lolita was never censored by the federal government. However, the public library board often questioned this, sometimes removing it from the shelf or placing it in a restricted location (Feeney, 1993).

Protest: In 1966, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, the library restricted access to the book because of a patron's complaint (Feeney, 1993).
