Digital Mapping

Digital mapping can be categorized as an interactive digital maps to study literary text, historical places, events, artifacts, and sociology. Maps are a representations/interpretations of space, reflecting i.e. human behaviours in space, wealth distribution, movement of people and phenomena, urban structures – from the point of view of one specific culture. It is a compilation of collected data such as locations, images and stories that allow the creator to incorporate these aspects together to produce a virtual map. Allowing others to better understand/connect with that certain time. Thought digital mapping shares a lot of the same purposes as traditional paper maps, digital mapping projects can be updated to date when needed. This is something that is more complicated and time consuming when it comes to traditional paper maps.

Project – The First story project is interactive digital maps about the Indigenous past and present of Toronto. It allows the users to see current Toronto landmarks as they use to pertain to the Indigenous community.

Course reading – Rueck article looks at mapping as a power tool in regards to tracking and distributing political power. A map was created for the DNA to wipe out individual ways of the land and bring in the colonial views. Neat line was used to exhibit both inscribed and incorporated culture.

Tool used – Neat line was the main platform used in class when it came to creating digital mapping projects. This platform allows the user to annotate maps or images for the use of humanities studies – future use, tell a story and see where it is happening in space.

Specific detail – Digital mapping allowed me to understand new advantages in regards to distributing information. It allows the creator/viewer to travel from one location to another with images and stories guiding their way. Which allows the individual to take in the information, for myself, it allowed me to engage and better understand the information I was interacting with through all the additional elements.
