3D Printing
3D printing is the process in which three-dimensional objects are built from a digital file. The technology uses a layering effect to build up the object. Many components go in to printing, which allows every objects to be catered to the individuals needs/wants. The objects are manufactured by materials such as plastic, PLA, nylon, glass, etc. Manufacturing a 3D object is beneficial because it is a fast production, cost effective, more accessible. Creating a 3D model allows the individual to interact and understand an objects that without this, they may have never got the chance to experiences.

Project – Medical prosthetics, this project is happening right here at the University of Toronto. By using printing technologies individuals are able to get prostheses fitted specifically to their body.
Course reading – In Keymolen reading the point gets brought up that 3D printing becomes an interpersonal, social practice due to software design like Thingiverse which allow for instant communication, collaboration and feedback among individuals. Removing the double distance as the process involves active involvement and the user friendly printer model makes it more accessible to those with little to no background in engineering or computer science. The user being able to print a model could give them a greater advantage and new perspective to engage with
Tool used – MarkerBot design is a free installable software that allows the individual to upload files to. Once in this software, all details pertaining to your 3D object can be adjusted/altered. Once your model is completed the software will also provide an estimated time frame that the specific printer which will be used will take to print your object – future use, create or adjust 3D objects for personal, academic or professional use.
Specific detail – In this module I found it interesting when the class was discussing guns as (free speech). In 2013 a student from the University of Texas was planning to release blueprints for creating a 3D gun. This caused much controversy among society – one side saw it as giving the wrong people access to this information can result in a negative impact. Where others saw this as a right individuals should have. The class was in an overall agreement that there has to be guidelines and restrictions when it comes to creativeness in printing 3D models. Thinking beyond an individual’s rights, needs to be considered and actions need to be taken to protect the vast majority.
