E.T. the Extraterrestrial is the title of a videogame developed by the now-defunct Atari, Inc. in 1982. It was developed for the Atari 2600 (originally referred to as the Atari Video Computer System), a home videogame console. The game is based on the well-known movie E.T. the Extraterrestrial directed by Steven Spielberg.
The game is a 2-D adventure game, in which players control the titular character of the film, E.T. The goal of the game is to collect fragments of a telephone located in various pits throughout the map. There is no time limit; however, E.T. has limited energy and must keep his energy up by collecting Reese's Pieces on different stages of the map. Energy decreases as the player moves E.T. around the map. Collecting nine Reese's Pieces also yields the player a fragment of the telephone. Once three fragments of the telephone are collected, E.T. must reach an open space on the map where he can use the completed telephone to call his home planet to retrieve him. A spaceship picks E.T. up and the game starts over, with telephone fragments now in different pits on the map. The game ends when E.T. runs out of energy. Throughout the game, the player must avoid a scientist and an FBI agent; the scientist takes E.T. to a different part of the map and the FBI agent removes telephone pieces or Reese's Pieces from the player's inventory.
