Introduction

Passional Christi und Antichristi is a pamphlet produced during the Reformation period in Wittenberg, Germany, displaying Reformation propaganda against the Catholic church.  The use of print to distribute the pamphlet allowed for Protestant ideologies to be spread throughout Europe, reaching a large number of people.   The exhibit showcases some of the pairs of woodcuts in the pamphlet and discusses the following aspects: the social and historical context in which the book was written, the book itself, and the technology used. Luther’s bold stances against the Catholic church were seen as heretical and his restrictions against his writings were imposed, endangering his works. Passional Christi und Antichristi is an example of Lutheran writing of the time that defied the Church, but sustained due to the technology used.
