Ninety-Five Theses

The Ninety-Five Theses is known as the main document of the Reformation. In order to understand the Reformation movement, one must understand the content, context, and the result of printing this document. This document was written by Martin Luther in the year 1517 and was sent out ot the Archibishop of Maiz and posted on many churches of the town Weinberg as a call against the corruption of the church. (Wengert, 16).

The purpose of the Ninety-Five Theses is to invite local masters in religion to a disputation on indulgences. Luther also addressed issues with hierarchy within the Church that has affected the purity of the faith.

The Ninety-Five Theses is consists of Ninety-Five statements that are found to be issues within the church addessed by Martin Luther. The main argument and purpose of the theses can be simply summarized with three points:

     1) The current Christian institution has diverted its focus from obeying God and his word to obeying men within the institution. Many of the people in charge within the church has helped in causing this situation because they have been corrupt and do not desrve their position in serving God.

     2) A simple man does not have a direct connection with god anymore. The men within the church has acted as a middle man between God and his servants and thus has caused the person in the middle to have power over other people in order to reach God and his forgivness. T

     3) The church has lost its purity by neglecting those who do not have any power or poor even though the main job of the church is to protect those who are under the faith.  (Wengert, 19-35)).
