Hamlet (1990), Franco Zeffirelli
Franco Zeffirelli’s 1990 film adaptation of Hamlet featuring Mel Gibson uses a warmly but dimly lit court along with dark red and black outfits and gold metallic accessories to depict Hamlet observing Claudious’ reaction from the crowd during the dumbshow in act three scene two. Due to the dark colours and costumes, the movie produces a solemn atmosphere even during a somewhat recreational event, reflecting Hamlet’s true intentions of gauging Claudius' reaction as opposed to a somewhat festive atmosphere typically associated with plays.
