Analysis

The text hails Beowulf as the ultimate champion and hero. His decision to fight Grendel with the use of only his strength highlights his character’s valour. He chooses not to be weighed down by an armour, as he views Grendel as someone who is in pain and seeking revenge. He understands the motives of Grendel and thus is able to defeat him. He is able to see Grendel for who he is, a creature who is lost but strong and is able to fight any weapon. Beowulf is aware before he enters the fight, that it will only be his strength that will defeat him and no shield will be of any use. The use of no shield also draws emphasis on of the main themes of “evil vs. good” and in light of evil, the truth and justice will always prevail. Ultimately, Beowulf wins and once again it is ‘good’ that emerges victorious. The battle is also significant as it is a literal representation of the theme “monster vs. man”, moreover, since Beowulf is not protected by anything nor is he relying on any weapon, it is the most truthful battle between a monster and a man. The man here is Beowulf, although he is viewed as a god-like figure, and his strength and integrity leads to the downfall of Grendel. The true virtue of Beowulf is thus only heightened by his decision, as he is the honest representation of goodness and hence, does not need any armour to win this battle.
