Introduction
My exhibit focuses on Heather Has Two Mommies by Lesléa Newman. This book, published in 1989, was one of the first children’s picture books portraying lesbian characters to become popular in the US. However, it was challenged by parents who were afraid that their children would be negatively influenced by the exposure to homosexual families. This project looks at how Heather, and similar LGBT+ children’s media, forced Americans to ask themselves how soon is too soon to teach children about homosexuality and acceptance.
