Historical Context and Injustices

Canada's history with Indigenous peoples and the legal system is marked by persistent criminalization and systematic injustices. Legal frameworks, such as the Indian Act and residential schools, exemplify colonial values. Figure 2, showing indigenous pupils at the British Columbia Residential School, vividly represents how the legal system supported cultural repression.

Argument for Reconciliation

Cesaroni, Grol, and Fredericks (2019) highlight the disproportionate participation of Indigenous youth in the criminal justice system. Cunneen and Tauri's (2019) non-scholarly observations offer valuable insights, emphasizing the need for transformative actions. Survivors’ Sharing Circle at Truth and Reconciliation in the Commission Manitoba National Event, June 2010 (Figure 3), shared the challenges in reconciling conflicting perspectives.
