Introduction

The Origin of Species is a text written by Charles Darwin that discusses the evolutionary theory. It was one of the first books to introduce evolution, and was banned in 1859 for its conflict with religious values. Darwin explained evolution through his Theory of Natural Selection, and he also introduced the idea of Survival of the Fittest. This book was banned because it undermined the idea of mankind being God’s divine creation, and directly challenged the existence of God. It was highly criticized to say the least, because religion, especially Christianity, was basis for science and society in Britain where Darwin lived. It was banned in most academic institutions including Darwin’s alma matter, and up until the mid 20th century has till been banned in some places including schools in Tennessee and in counties like Greece and Yugoslavia.
