"Blindness" was written by Jose Saramago back in 1995 in its original language of Portuguese.

It was not until 1997 with which an official English publication followed.

Saramago is famed for authoring several books providing various new perspectives upon life and society. Most notably among them however, is his book "Blindness" for which he was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature. 

Summary of the text

A small traffic jam is caused when a man abruptly finds himself with complete blindness in both eyes. He goes to a doctor for help. The doctor, unable to find the root cause, goes on with his day and tells the man he will do more research and get back to him. Later that night, he too goes blind. And so does everyone else who he interacted with. Catastrophe ensues as the epidemic begins to take form.
