Title

Hermann Composite folio 162v-163r

Description

Illustrations on parchment leaves 12.5''h x 9.5''w.
162v: The illustrated Anticladianus sequence concludes with an alternate ending to Alan's original poem in which the perfect man is explicitly identified as Jesus. (Newman 2003, 84) 12 miniature inserts in a square grid. Intended to be read in sequence, top down in three columns. Captions in margins in red and black ink and beside figures providing names in red. Figures outlined with black ink and lightly colored and shaded with primarily yellow and red ink, along with some light greys.
163r - The beginning of the illustrated commentary on the fifteen signs of the apocalypse. (Fisher Library) Two painted miniatures in decorated, vertically divided inserts with text captions above in black ink, written in a gothic script. The extraordinary variety of colors, refinement of line and heavy use of blue suggest a deluxe project. Silver leaf utilized for details has worn down and tarnished over time, losing definition. The first two signs, blood raining from the sky and the light of the sun replaced with darkness.
