The map layer that I have created for this assignment is a hand drawn symbolic map that focuses on the modules explored in this course. The map takes each module (digital mapping, AR/VR and 3D printing) and uses a combination of symbolic images and various interpretations of some of my personal highlights/memories of the lectures and labs throughout the semester. The map itself represents digital mapping as it is a digital map that utilizes visual data that I have gathered throughout this course and reflects on the discipline of digital humanities and what I have learned in this course. Furthermore, just like digital maps, the symbolic map layer for this project also highlights how maps are not necessarily only for geographic representations but can also tell a story (in this case my experience with WDW236). Also, from creating this map with personalized inputs we can also notice how (similar to 3D printing) the user becomes the creator and feels like they have become apart of the project.
Finally, my most important takeaway from this course is getting firsthand experience of how technological tools and methodologies are used to examine the humanities. Specifically through the VR experience and the AGO tour and talking to people conducting digital humanities projects, 3D printing my own object, creating our own digital mapping exhibits, the numerous guest lectures (including Desmond Wong’s data infrastructure lecture) and the labs that we attend weekly, I was able to obtain a diverse perspective on the discipline of digital humanities from student to creator to user.
In addition, I also took with me a variety of technical skills including the ability to create digital story maps and exhibits (using ArcGIS, Neatline and Omeka), certification for 3D printing, utilizing various VR and AR applications, and employing and understanding the importance of proper metadata descriptions. This is significant as these skills can be applied into numerous fields and in the professional environment.
