Reflecting on this assignment.

The media aspect helped me visualize what I was talking about, especially when it came to Gladue courts across Canada. I wanted to show how sparse they are, with many clumped into a single province and many provinces in between with none. Palladio was helpful in illustrating what I was trying to say. However, Palladio was one of the most difficult obstacles I had to overcome, especially because they do not allow you to export your graph and embed it in other places, so I instead took a screenshot of my final graph and left a link in the metadata to the Excel spreadsheet I created of the Gladue courts across Canada.

According to Christen (2015) in Why the "s" Matters, "the colonial collecting project was a destructive mechanism by which Native materials were unhinged from their local places and knowledge and at the same time used as markers of Native erasure" (p. 1). Of course, this raised concerns for me when I was collecting data through the Government of Canada's archives as well as the CBC. The visual material was the major ethical worry I had while discussing missing and murdered indigenous women. I was going to use photos, but it felt horrible to publish a photo of a woman whose life had (potentially) been taken, so I opted against it and instead used a snapshot of some of the statistics concerning missing and murdered indigenous women.
