Introduction

"On the Origin of Species" is a scientific book published by Charles Darwin in London, England 1859. The book’s topics were based on his observations during his travels upon the HMS Beagle. However, the exhibit will emphasize the theory of evolution which caused international controversy as it was believed to violate Creationism. In the late 19th century, many religious authors began writing against Darwin’s theory which popularized the topic in the US. The exhibit will cover the reception of Darwin’s ideas in the US and the prohibition law in Tennessee resulting in the Scopes Trial in 1925. In the 21st century, the theory of evolution continues to face challenges in the education system across the US. "On the Origin of Species" demonstrates a community’s acceptance of new principles is dependant on the pre-existing beliefs and culture of the society’s majority. The events in the United States in response to Darwinism will be examined along with the legislature’s influence on academia shaping access to knowledge.
