Illustrated parchment folio from a 20-leaf manuscript, 245 x 185 mm.
An incomplete "picture book" from England produced in the late 1300s, depicting the events from the book of Genesis. Each side of the parchment is decorated with four miniatures on a panel grid, captioned with text adapted from the work of Petrus Comestor, written in a gothic script. Some important figures are also named with accompanying captions. Many of the illustrations are clearly unfinished, some sporting more detail and natural shading than the rest and many left uncaptioned. Captions cease entirely at the tenth folio, and by folio 16 the illustrations are completely unfinished, preliminary sketches without ink or colour.(Egerton MS 1894 2019)
