Hermann Composite folio 166v-167r

Description

Illustrations on parchment leaves 12.5''h x 9.5''w. (Fisher Library)
f.166v- The fifteenth sign of the apocalypse and a dedication to Hermann. Painted miniatures in two decorated, vertically divided inserts , accompanied by text captions above in black ink, written in a gothic script. The extraordinary variety of colors, refinement of line and heavy use of blue suggest a deluxe project. Some illustrations possibly unfinished. The dedication to Hermann depicts the abbot kneeling before Saint Peter, offering him a book. The caption of the dedication has been left blank.
f.167r - a painted depiction of the last judgement in the same material as the fifteen signs series, in two illustrations divided horizontally and captioned with red ink. The first, larger insert depicts Jesus descending from heaven, the second shows the respective rewards and punishments of virtuous people and sinners. Note the shift from German to Latin text and the labeling of named individuals.
