Q*bert

My exhibit is about Q*bert, which is a retro video game created by Warren Davis and Jeff Lee. Q*bert is an action puzzle platform game which was developed in 1982 by Gottlieb, an arcade game company. The new wave of video game experiences at the dawn of the 21st century resulted in a phasing out of arcade cabinet games, pushing games like Q*bert into obsolescence. This makes Q*bert an endangered video game, and like many endangered artifacts, this opens a door for preservation. Emulation is a popular form of preservation for video games, however emulation comes with its own challenges. This exhibit will discuss what makes Q*bert unique, the struggles of preserving Q*bert, and what we can learn from Q*bert’s obsolescence.
