Monstrosity and Humanity of the Bisclavret - Poe Palae Phyu

Through the analysis of Bisclavret¹ by Marie De France, a scholarly research journal and several artefacts, this exhibition will explore the monstrosity and humanity of the bisclavret and how they coexist with one another. The poem Bisclavret portrays both the monstrous and humane aspects of the creature as it showcases his strong will to get revenge towards those who betrayed him yet do not display any form of violence towards any other humans. Using the artefacts “Illustration from the Rochester Bestiary,” “Bodleian Library MS. Douce 266 fol. 006b recto from Book of Hours,” and “Royal MS 13 B VIII, f.18r from Topographia Hibernica,” we will be exploring how werewolves, and wolves in general, were perceived in medieval times and how clothing plays an important role in determining the mental state of the monster.
