MST 201: The Tale of Grendel

This exhibition demonstrates the relationship between the selected narrative of the monster Grendel from the medieval epic poem Beowulf and the relevant page of its medieval manuscript. The old English word ellengæst (powerful demon) in the chosen passage sheds light on the nature and background of Grendel in general in the Beowulf manuscript. The manuscript, as a form of material culture, retraces partly the historical context of the story. The other two objects of interest, one iron pattern-welded sword, and one earthenware pottery, are shown in the exhibition as well, to strengthen the imagery of Grendel in the disaster he brings.
