"The Origin of Species" by Charles Darwin is considered to be the foundation of modern evolutionary biology, as Darwin's theory of evolution put forth the ideas of natural selection and adaptation. Published in 1859, the work sparked controversy in the scientific community as well as the religious community, and was banned and outlawed until the 1950s when the ideas of natural selection were fully accepted.
