The “Finn Episode” depicting the life of Queen Hildeburh is told in the form of a song in celebration of Grendel’s defeat at Hrothgar’s court. Storytelling in Beowulf, as illustrated through the story of Queen Hildeburh’s mourning is a tool not only for foreshadowing, but can also be interpreted as a form of memory and honouring legacies, and within that, a warning for listeners of such stories to beware of falling victim to the same circumstances of the tragedies of the told stories. This analysis will compare the Heaney and Luizzo translations to better understand the varying depictions of grief, power, and warnings in the storytelling tactics of the King’s poet in Beowulf.
