The Plague by Albert Camus is about the story of Dr.Castel who is working in the city of Oran in
Algeria and whose colleague Dr. Rieux died due to symptoms which are related to bubonic
plague. The death of Dr. Rieux occurred after an invasion of dead rats which bodies were found
in the city’s streets.
Authorities denied the bubonic plague possibility and tried to contain the situation. Yet the death
rates were increasing, which led to the end putting the city under quarantine. The city’s people
went through the sad emotions of being isolated away from the rest of the country.
There are other characters in the novel like Father Paneloux, who declared during a ceremony
that this plague is God’s punishment for Oran’s people’s sins.
Another character is Raymond Rambert, a journalist who is trying to escape and go to Paris to
be with his wife.
In the end, the plague comes to an end and the city reopens, but the characters carry a scar in
their souls forever.
