<text>"The earliest published plans for the Dictionary are the transcripts of a conference held in Toronto on 21-22 March 1969; these were published as Computers and Old English concordances, and while concordances were one of the two main topics of discussion, the other was “an exploration of the possibilities for beginning work on a large-scale Old English dictionary.”2 As well as being an important record for historians of computing in the humanities, this volume notes several issues that would arise again and again throughout the next forty years of the Dictionary of Old English Project, the consideration of which, in 1969, would have far-reaching consequences. These included basing the Dictionary on a digital corpus, the use of editions or manuscripts for this corpus, problems in lemmatization, and the decision to produce the Dictionary in a digital environment" (Peter A. Stokes, "The Digital Dictionary," Florilegium, vol. 26 (2009): 37-65, p. 38). The volume shows the Dictionary of Old English's emblem, the wyrm, based on a ninth-century sculpted creature on a cross-shaft fragment from Wamphray, Dumfriesshire (Cameron et al, p. 2; see also https://canmore.org.uk/site/319260/wamphray-church).</text>

An incomplete "picture book" from England produced in the late 1300s, depicting the events from the book of Genesis. Each side of the parchment is decorated with four miniatures on a panel grid, captioned with text adapted from the work of Petrus Comestor, written in a gothic script. Some important figures are also named with accompanying captions. Many of the illustrations are clearly unfinished, some sporting more detail and natural shading than the rest and many left uncaptioned. Captions cease entirely at the tenth folio, and by folio 16 the illustrations are completely unfinished, preliminary sketches without ink or colour.(Egerton MS 1894 2019)</text>

<text>Persian, Indian, and European forms converge in this stunning painting of Alexander the Great (Eskandar). Seated in a pose that resembles that of the Mughal ruler Humayun, Eskandar wears a helmet engraved with the image of a horse -- perhaps his beloved Bucephalus -- that echoes the prancing animals at upper right. The helmet's Italian all'antica style ("in the manner of the ancients") both signals the adoption of European motifs in Mughal India and participates in a revival of the shared classical past epitomized by Alexander.</text>
